• Macbook Pro 15" retina mid-2012

    Hey all,

So I still have my old Macbook Pro from mid 2012, and I just updated it to the latest available "official" OS version, 10.15.7 Catalina.

I was wondering if it was possible to either a) get a newer than officially supported macOS version on here? Thinking like Monterey perhaps (v12) or b) should I bin off macOS and go get Ubuntu 25.10 and install that on it.

I really don't need anything specific to macOS, I'm not bought into that ecosystem, it would be cool to keep it as close to stock as possible perhaps, but I think it might be more usable (for me perhaps) with Linux on it rather than macOS... but, as I haven't fired it up for over a year until today, chances are I'll probably not again for another year lol.

What would y'all do? Give me your thoughts and opinions.

    Howdy,

So I had an old MacBook Air 11 which was running so slowly it was a pain. (Actually the wife uses it).

So I installed Mint on it (XFCE) and it runs surprisingly well.

She only needs a browser and thunderbird for mail, and I have localsend on their to transfer stuff between her phone...

I'm about to do the same to a 2012 iMac, which my son uses to play minecraft.

Yer gonna wanna take a look at OLCP - OpenCore Legac Patcher. It will let you put up to MacOS Sequoia on older Macs... I do have a YT video covering my 20XX iMac, but I think you'll get it.

i think the best is to install linux, so you can get software updates. :)

i have an old 17" macbook pro (2007 maybe?) in my studio with mac os x (snow leopard maybe?) just for running ableton live. (the ableton is also an oldish version, but does the job well and its stable as hell)
