The answers to today's Strands, game #595, are SAUCE JELLY BUTTER CIDER COMPOTE STRUDEL FRITTER SPANGRAM: APPLES My rating: Hard My score: Perfect

When I got my first two words SAUCE and JELLY I was in the dark and initially thought that we were looking for different types of condiments.

Getting BUTTER didnt help much either, but I ploughed on and resisted using a hint. A good thing, as CIDER finally made me see that APPLES was the connection, confirmed by the thankfully short spangram.

As proved by this game, APPLES are up there with potatoes as a cheap and versatile produce you can do dozens of things with.

In the battle of what is the best, apples may well win thanks to the wonder that is apple pie, but then potatoes will always have fries. Hmmm I can feel
