My first synthesizer was a PAIA kit that a friend and I put together. It was junk, really. They sent a lot of substitute parts that were questionable. I got it together and it worked ok but it would never stay in tune. I ended up using it in a band I was in but instead of playing the synth the usual way, I would hit it with mallots. They were SOFT mallots but I eventually beat my synth to death. Fun times!

I don't even know how a synth would go out of tune - Since they play synthesized sound/notes, I'd think the the sound they'd generate for a note would be fairly constant? And when you say you hit it with mallots, do you mean you'd hit the keys to push them?

The synth would leak voltage. That's the best way I know to describe what it was doing. There were no chips or anything in it. It was totally analog. Yes, I would strike the keys to trigger them.
