You get what you pay for...maybe it's not a matter of what's "better" but
what works for you. I have a cheap guitar I got for $50 from Craigslist.
It's a Fernandes strat in red and it's really nice. I have a $350 strat I picked up at a pawn shop and never play it these days. I have another $50
pawn shop special that I put really light strings on and play that from time
    to time.

Best thing to do is go to a guitar shop and spend a few hours trying
different types and styles and neck lengths on different wood on the fret
board and play with the knobs and dials, see if it holds its tuning etc.

Thanks for the tip but I wanted to go to the store with a few names in mind. Back in the day there were only two electric guitars to chose from. Gibson and/or Fender.

It probably depends on whether you want an acoustic or an electric. It seems Squier (Fender's budget line) has some Strat models under $200, but even for a budget line, some of them are pushing $400 or so (which is what a Fender Mexican-made Strat used to cost about 15-20 years ago). Squiers have gotten to be fairly good though, from what I've heard.

A long time ago, I bought a DeArmond D-65, which was a Gibson SG copy, from eBay for around $100 or so. I actually thought it was a fairly good guitar and sounded good. I sold it after a number of years though.

Some people say tone is mostly in the fingers, and might have you believe it doesn't really matter what you pay for a guitar.. Perhaps to an extent that's true - A $1600 Strat might not necessarily be any better for you than a $450 Strat. Part of it is what feels good for you to play, but I think it's good to buy a guitar that is put together well with good craftsmanship.

Thanks for the tip but I wanted to go to the store with a few names in mind. Back in the day there were only two electric guitars to chose from. Gibson and/or Fender.

One thing that might give you an idea would be to browse Guitar Center's web site - www.guitarcenter.com . There, you can look at electric guitars if you want, and you can also filter by price. You can select both the "$100 - $200" and "$50 - $100", for instance. There, I see some Squiers, some from Epiphone (Gibson's budget brand), and others. That can at least give you an idea of what's on the market, and then you can go into a store to see if they have any of those brands & models.

I've also heard there are fans of the Yamaha Pacifica electric guitar. Those are a Strat-style guitar, and I see Guitar Center has one for about $180 (it's a model with a humbucker in the bridge and 2 single-coil pickups).

I've been thinking on how to respond to this. I ageee that a lot of it is in the fingers, more so for me because I don't actually play with a pick. I could never get on with it and I drove my guitar teacher mad because I refused to used one. I'm a big Mark Knopfler fan so try to replicate his style which is great for Money for Nothing or Walk of Life, not so good for Crazy Train! :)

But the build quality comes into it as well. The $50 guitar I have doesn't have a neck that is true, and if I'm not careful, with the really light strings, I can bend the high E off the fret board and it's stuck behind one of the frets before. It's really good for those David Gilmour 2 1/2 octave bends tho.
