    I hope this isn't in poor taste but I once saw a 'comic' in some
    magazine and one soldier was talking to another and said, "If this
    is the war to end all wars, why are they giving it a number?"

    In fairness, I don't think WWI was numbered until WWII happened. ;)

    In fairness, I don't think WWI was numbered until WWII happened. ;)

    Likely, and to be honest I'm sure the soldiers were supposed to be
    from WWII, but maybe they like to think that all of them are the war
    to end all wars.. B)

    In a word, really.

    Back in the 70's I was at a party in Canada and there was a
    Canadian soldier who had just come back from Vietnam and he said
    that he'd been posted where the Americans killed were shipped
    back to the USA.. There was a little talk about the war in general
    and he said, "They say that 50,000 Americans were killed in the war..
    and I could name more than 100,000 of them..", suggesting that the
    numbers the public were given were greatly toned down.
