Has anyone switched over to the Brave browser (https://brave.com) yet? I read an article
about it and decided to give it a try.

It works just like the Chrome browser, but has a lot of additional features built in like ad
blocking. I find that when I am on YouTube viewing videos using Chrome, the ads are
overwhelming. With Brave, not a one. For this reason alone I think it is a winner.

Some people like Brave, others hate it. I don't really understand the
two sided thing. Use what you like.

I know that Chrome is going to be making changes to the addon API system
at some point. I don't know how this will eventually affect Chromium and
other projects that use the source code like Edge and Brave.

I've not used YouTube in a browser in a long while, I really enjoy
FreeTube too much. Can "subscribe" to channels without an account no
    data leakage, etc.

If your on a browser you could always load uBlock Origin and
SponsorBlock for YouTube, this should also block normal ads and ads in
    your videos as well.

I checked out FreeTube and it looks like a good program. I think I will stay with Brave

ads and more. But I will check out FreeTube on one of my computers to give it a look.

Not only is it one of the zillion Chromium forks taking over the Internet through false competition, but it's run by known anti-LGBTQIA+ anti-vaxxer cryptoshit Brendan Eich, and has cryptoshit deeply & irreversibly integrated into it.

Nowadays, I find it a bonus rather than a malus when something is run by somebody who angers easily offended people. I guess Brave gets some ++ points for not sponsoring the word soup brigade.

I use Firefox myself with the arkenfox user.js and some other tricks. Brave is very popular among people who wants a Chromium based browser with adblocking integrated, so I appreciate it exists. I am a fan of most stuff that starves the advertisement industry, specially hypocrite bullies such as Google.

    Hello all,

it seemed pretty decent. Thinking about trying it on Linux but wanted
to know if there are any first-hand experienced user stories on it.

I have it on 4 computers and the switch was seamless. I used the 'sync' feature to
ensure that all of my computers have not just the same bookmarks, but also the same
home page screen on them all.

I also do a lot of YouTube watching and - no ads in between the various videos.

The stats on the computer I am using now is:
    10,196 Trackers & ads blocked
    256.8MB Bandwidth saved
    9minutes Time saved
and that is just in one week or so.

I've been following this a bit and wanted to mention that I use the Opera browser, which in the background is based on (at times) Chrome or Mozilla
but with a much nicer to use (IMHO) front end.

It also blocks Ads and Trackers and can sync multiple devices - I use it on
my Phone and my Tablet and my Laptop - and it has a basic VPN built in if
you choose to turn it on. Latest versions have some version of AI (Aria?)
added but I don't generally use those.

My phone says it's blocked 24,452 Ads and 51,648 Trackers.. (Android)

I've used Opera for decades, possibly since Windows 3.1.. Definitely Win 95.

Opera is now also based on Chrome, it used to have its' own engine. I
used to use Opera back in 96-97 I believe.

Opera is now owned by a public Chinese company. Is what it is, the
interface in the old versions and the new ones has always been really neat.

I always thought it was only compatible with Macs so I never tried it. Good to know it
has those features. I am now totally invested in Brave since I bookmark a lot of sites

I see that there is no direct way to sync between Opera and Brave, but thanks for the

Yes, I saw something in it about syncing but I guess it only syncs itself between devices. If I'm not mistaken it can import from other browsers, although maybe not from Brave for some reason..

Yes, instructions say you can choose Import Data and then select the
source browser and which things you want to import, so it looks like
it should work reasonably well with some browsers..

Does it work on Banking and financial sites? I find some sites refuse to
allow Opera, likely because it blocks their ability to 'spy' on who you
    are to verify your identity.

Mainly there's just one banking site that does that to me on Opera so I
just use something else there but I'm pretty sure there's a way to set
Opera to not protect your identity for a specific site, but it hasn't
been enough of an issue for me to look into it more. I run an older
version of Opera on my main Laptop, since it is running Windows 7, and
that site works fine from there but the Android version on my phone is
kept right up to date and that's the one that causes issues..

One thing that I find annoying regarding browsers... "private/incognito"
mode is supposed to afford you a little more security. So, I usually use
that to access any systems that may contain my sensitive information (like
the bank) and that require a userid/password.

The problem there is that the bank site is always going to treat that
private mode browser session as a red flag, which means I always get a lot
more "are you a robot" challenges with pictures or other things that are
barely legible, even on a decent sized monitor.

It is an annoyance but I guess it is more secure than the alternative. ;)

Firefox on OpenBSD uses some security frameworks available from the OS by default. In a nutshell, the kernel monitors whether Firefox is doing stuff browser is supposed to do, or if it is doing something else.

I have noticed my browser has a bad tendency to invoke syscalls it is not supposed to invoke when accesing my main banking site, trying to do tty stuff and the like. The OS defense trigges automatically when that happens, asumes the application has gone rogue, and kills the offending process.

It is great because the bank cannot play naughty games in my sistem. It is bad because their site is effectively broken. At the end of the day I use a sandboxed banking app for it in my smartphone.

Those are especially a lot of fun on a cell phone.. B)

It is an annoyance but I guess it is more secure than the alternative. ;)

Most of the financial sites I use these days have the double log-in where
they text or eMail (or can phone) you a pin number that you use after
you've already signed on with a password. I haven't run across those stupid hard to see Photo 'robot' challenges on the banking sites up here but last
week I went to go on a banking site I rarely use from my phone and there was some part of the Login that would have taken an annoying amount of time to
find on the phone so I gave up and disconnected. The next time I go to that bank site, they won't let me log on unless I jump through a lot of hoops
and tell them that, yes, that was me the other day.. and then they insisted that I go in and change security questions and my password and such before
I can get to my account, this on my computer now.

Fortunately (?) when I went to the security setup (at about 2 AM) access
was down (for maintenance?) and I was able to bypass that and did get on.
Now that I think about it, I haven't been back there yet so I don't know
for sure I won't get hit with the same thing again next time..

That is the most annoying part. The have the multi-factor logon... userID/password, then a pin to your phone... but, I assume because I am
always in private/incognito mode in my browser, it still makes me do the 'robot' challenges... sometimes many of them... before I can proceed.

The 'robot' challenge round usually happens between the logon and the
    sending of the pin.

The next time I go to that bank site, they won't let me log on unless I jump through a lot of hoops
and tell them that, yes, that was me the other day.. and then they insisted that I go in and change security questions and my password and such before
I can get to my account, this on my computer now.

I am not surprised. Like I said I guess it is more secure but, then again,
a persistant criminal will probably keep jumping through the hoops, too,
    until they are successful.

Fortunately (?) when I went to the security setup (at about 2 AM) access
was down (for maintenance?) and I was able to bypass that and did get on.
Now that I think about it, I haven't been back there yet so I don't know
for sure I won't get hit with the same thing again next time..

    Good luck! :D

    Mike
