• Are cherry tomatoes as healthy as regular tomatoes?

From Mike Dippel@999:1/1 to All on Thursday, September 04, 2025 22:38:10
Cherry tomatoes are both vegetables and fruits, and their nutritional value is much
    higher than regular tomatoes.

Cherry tomatoes are one of the "four major fruits" prioritized by the United Nations Food
    and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Cherry tomatoes are much smaller than regular tomatoes, about 1 to 3 cm in diameter
and weigh 10 to 30 grams.

There are several varieties of cherry tomatoes that vary in appearance and color, ranging
from bright red to yellow, green, and black.

Cherry tomatoes contain twice as much vitamin C and vitamin E as regular tomatoes,
and 10 times as much folic acid as regular tomatoes, It also has a much higher mineral
    content than regular tomatoes.

It is worth mentioning that cherry tomatoes are an excellent source of glutathione and
    lycopene.

Glutathione is present in almost every cell of the human body and has a strong antioxidant effect, which can strengthen and protect the body's immune system.

Lycopene is a natural pigment contained in cherry tomatoes, which can remove harmful
free radicals in the body, protect cells, and delay the aging process of cells.

I love the cherry tomatoes, but they say "you should not
    refrigerate them".

A few weeks back, I had bought 2 small cartons of 4 vine
ripenend tomatoes each (8 total), with shredded lettuce, and
"low sodium fully cooked microwave bacon". With wheat bread
and mayonnaise, I made some delicious BLT sandwiches.

We will now pause 3 minutes for drooling. <G>

Cherry tomatoes are both vegetables and fruits,

I thought tomatoes technically were just fruits (though botanically classified as vegetables) - The reason being that they produce seeds on the inside, or something?

    and their nutritional
    value is much
    higher than regular tomatoes.

That's interesting to know. Lately I've been buying cherry tomatoes rather than regular tomatoes, so I can just put them in salads without cutting them first.

Lately I haven't been refrigerating any tomatoes I buy. It seems there's no need to.

Also, a couple years ago, we grew some of our own cherry tomatoes on our porch. Fresh home-grown tomatoes are really good, and they're something you can even grow at home even if you have an apartment (if you have a porch, anyway).
