Please update your WinRAR, there has been some recent exploits recently. Keep your version current if you use it.

I don't use WinRAR much anymore these days; I just discovered the version I have is fairly 'old' now (version 5.50 from 2017).. I'll install the latest.

I may be one of the few people who actually registered WinRAR years ago. :P I had used it enough that I figured it would be good for me to pay for a license.

I've also seen a Star Trek meme with Q saying "the trial never ends" with the WinRAR icon on it.

I feel like someone could make something similar for the various Linux window managers and call it something like X-RAR, GnomeRAR, KRAR, or similar.. :)

No need for extra letters. The "rar" package is available in most distros, and if you only need to extract RAR files, there is also "unrar".

Well yes, but those are command-line utilities (and I do have them installed). I was thinking along the lines of a GUI utility, as WinRAR is a RAR tool with a Windows GUI.. Also my post was a bit tongue-in-cheek too (as in a WinRAR clone for Linux GUI environments).

Even so, I'm not sure I have any GUI extraction utilities for Windows any more. I don't really consider both Windows "Extract here.." and 7zip's right click and extract menu option much of a GUI utility, though. At least not like WinRAR used to be, anyway.

I should start /r/paidforwinamp -- back in 1997 or so, there was a paid version. I worked for a gaming company and we horsetraded software
licenses. We made out like bandits - trading a game title for 10 windows
CALs, or copies of Windows server...

We traded copies of Tomb Raider for 20-30 WinAMP licenses, right before
they went freeware. Sure, they might have pulled a fast one, but WinAMP
really *does* whip the llama's ass.

I don't use WinRAR much these days, but I still occasionally use it. It has a feature I always thought was handy, where you can select multiple archives (of most formats) in Windows Explorer, right-click, and have WinRAR extract each one into a separate subdirectory with its own name (named after the name of the archive). I haven't seen any other archiver for Windows that has that feature. But I suppose it may be possible to do some manual registry work to add that to the right-click context menu for any archiver in Windows, or write a batch file to do so..

I really liked WinAmp. I've used it recently, but now I have a 4K monitor and it seems WinAmp doesn't do UI scaling or respond to the Windows GUI zoom setting, so its window was really small.
