There's hot, then there is Georgia HOT. My pool is warm and even the well water isn't that cold right now. Was thinking of fabricating a styrofoam cooler and coiling the pump water hose to the pool through it filled with ice.

Indeed. Several months ago, I was on a trip that took me through the
desert SW. Although the temperature was hotter there, at least you could escape the Sun by getting in the shade (*if* you could find any).

In the SE, even in the shade you cannot escape the humidity.

Yep, I've been out there too. The old saying "It's a DRY heat" is very
true, and it doesn't feel nearly as bad as humid heat.

In the SE, even in the shade you cannot escape the humidity.

You got that right. It's pretty bad down here in the Florida panhandle already, and not even Aug/Sep yet...

I can definitely agree with that. Granted, here in WI between Saturday and today it was in the upper 90s, with the heat index up around 105. So sure, it has been pretty hot.

However, we went to the Orlando area in June last year for volleyball nationals when it was 105F all week with like 80% humidity. Fuck that, you can keep that shit.

We, along with other team parents, were sitting under a canopy at the resort at around midnight having some drinks, still complaining about the heat. No sun, yet still sweating through our shirts.

Then, the year before that we went to Peoria, AZ in June for vacation. Also 105F all week. Sure, when you were in the sun you felt like there was a torch pointed at you, but at least in the shade it was managable, and even dare I say enjoyable. (hardly any humidity at all). Evenings and nights were wonderful, too.

I can definitely tell the difference between the southwest and southeast. Yet here in WI, we get some of the best of both of those worlds, including Canada (it was 3 days, and now the rest of the week will be around 80F), where we can get down to -30F and lower in the winter. :(

Do you think that's similar to Arizona hot? Several years ago, I went to Arizona a few times for work, and in April, the temperature was already getting up to the mid-90s. I've heard actual summers in Arizona are pretty hot (often above 100-110+), where they recommend you stay inside and not go outside for extended lengths of time. I don't think that's the kind of weather I'd want to live in..

Yep that's the difference between "dry heat" and "humid heat". The "Heat Index" (what it actually feels like) is *FAR* worse with humidity. Same thing as the "wind chill factor" up in snow country.

Yes, I spent a few years near there, in the north Chicago suburbs, while in the Navy long ago. Winters were challenging but the rest of the year was pretty excellent weather-wise.

It's really pretty good here, for part of the year - from November to the end of April it's quite nice.

No, it's far more "hot feeling" here because of the humidity. A huge difference between 100 degress here compared to the SW desert areas. There's a thing called the "Heat Index" which takes into account the amplifying effect of humidity on how hot it actually feels to a person.

Arizona a few times for work, and in April, the temperature was already getting up to the mid-90s. I've found that when I'm in that (Southwest) area for any length of time (even a week), my sinuses get all dried out, my skin gets dry, and it's very easy to get dehydrated. I don't like that very much. Here in Florida I've gotten fairly adjusted to the humidity and although it feels hotter, it's more comfortable in some ways. No doubt that the summers can be challenging in that regard, although there's a pool or a beach not far away. ;-) Honestly it's no worse than enduring a long cold winter for half the year (which I have also done for years at a time). I prefer the warmth.

    Yeah, I can understand that.

In the northwest, we don't really get extreme weather either way. It's rarel extremely hot or cold. We don't rven get much snow in the winter, if at all, except in the desert area of the state. Sometimes we do get some snow that might last anywhere from a day to 2 weeks. In the summer, usually it doesn't get higher than 100 or so, but a few years ago, we had a record high of 118 or so.. Also, some people have talked about the humidity in the northwest, but I don't think it's as humid as some areas of the south. I've been to Texas and to Florida (Florida a long time ago) and I remember it being more humid than here.

    Hi, Bogomips.

Was thinking of fabricating a styrofoam
cooler and coiling the pump water hose to the pool through it filled with ice.

Maybe I'm being a bit thick but could you not just throw the ice into the pool water? Or are you planning to sit next to the returned water jet for maximum cooling effect?

I feel like you'd need an ice cube 3 feet squared to make a dent in the water temperature, though, and by the next day it would be warm again :\

    live in..

Right now, from at least Indiana southward, they are recommending you stay inside and not go outside for any length of time. It has been 90+F with >
    100F heat index values.

There is a difference when you are in the Sun... when I was in Superior,
AZ, it was wicked hot. When you get out in the Sun, it seemed to me that I felt it more on my skin. The air is not like "soup," though, as it would likely be at similar temperatures in the Gulf States. By the same token, it seemed like it was real difficult to keep my lips from drying out.

The main difference is in the shade. In AZ or Southern CA, if I found
myself in the shade, it didn't feel near as hot. I stopped at a rest area along I-10 in Southern CA. It was sunny and 100+F. They had a small area
set up with some trees and desert flowers. Even though the leaves on those trees are small (like locust trees), the shade felt *great*. There was
even a slight breeze under those trees.

In the shade in the SE, while you are not getting the direct sunlight,
you are still surrounded by the soupy air. Makes it a lot more difficult to cool off.

Being out in the Sun at those temperatures, in the SW or SE, is going to
    get to you real quick.

I lived right near the Great Lakes Navy Base, in the town of North

Yes, March is very nice usually. It does get surprisingly cold here in winters though. Overnight lows get below freezing probably 10-12 nights
in Dec/Jan, and daytime highs are sometimes in the 30's, often 40's.

This past January we had all-time record breaking snowfall in Pensacola.
We got NINE INCHES of snow and it was absolute armageddon here. Not
kidding, most people here had never even seen snow of that amount. It actually stayed visible on the ground for about 3 days, quite amazing.
