I know this is as old as hell, but a worthwhile topic (in case anyone is still listening)..
Something I've been lokoing quite closely at is B4X (Basic 4 Android, IoS etc) which is pretty fantastic. You can build native apps that it is possible to use cross platform (everything except the IoS development is free)..
Porting at least some of Synchronet to Android would open up a who other situation.. There are tons of android devices which are really really cheap and relatively well resourced...

    That sounds interesting.

I've sometimes thought that with a rooted Android device (or a jailbroken iOS device), you could get to a *NIX prompt and perhaps compile the Linux code (perhaps with some modifications) to get Synchronet running on the device.

I'm just surprised I received a reply at all :-)

I'm afraid my programming skills are too lacking. The basis for the whole thing is the msgbase, and I cannot get a "basic" version of that going, not it VB.Net, Gambas or B4A... so if there is someone else who could, then I'd be happy to start tackling some of the rest..

well he's wanting something he can create himself, I don't have the detai about it but I believe they were wanting to have embedded games etc.. som like a mobile bbs.. I really don't know if he's even sure what exactly he right now but I do know he's a great graphics artist and good at JS he ju knows nothing about synchronet, I was just telling him synchronet had all capabliltys he needed though as in a user database, message data bases et does'nt want a simple IM I think he's really trying to create a interact type user community with a theme base.

That's an interesting idea and might be cool to see. I don't think there would be any major obstacles to that, but I'm not sure what the best way to do that would be, as I haven't done any iPhone/Droid development (I've actually wanted to start looking into iPhone development recently but still haven't yet).

I've heard some people say they've had some luck compiling Synchronet for Mac's OS X, and the iPhone is based on OS X; maybe with a jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch, with the BSD subsystem tools and compilers installed on an iPhone, you might be able to compile Synchronet and run it on an iPhone..

Using an iPhone as a server like that though would probably mean you'd want it plugged into wall power all the time so that the battery wouldn't run out, and in that situation, why not just use a regular PC?

I was thinking he could run the BBS and pretty much use the web services to access everything, I'm sure a small app could be made for the phone that has macros, etc to intergrate with the web service.
